The Banff Mountain Film Festival is an international competition featuring the world's best films and videos on mountain and adventure subjects. It is held annually during the first weekend in November. In 2005, 319 films from 39 countries were submitted to the competition. Our pre-screening committee selected over 56 film finalists and these were screened for festival audiences during the week of the festival.

Each year during the festival week an international jury determines the best films and awards prizes in eight categories: Grand Prize, Climbing, Mountain Sports, Mountain Environment, Mountain Culture, Short Mountain Film and Feature-Length Mountain Film. Audience members decide the winner of the People's Choice Award.

Now entering its 13th year, Banff Mountain Book Festival celebrates the mountain world through speakers, readings, seminars, book signings, a book fair and the presentation of internationally recognized awards for mountain literature. Awards are presented to the best books in the categories of Grand Prize, Mountain Literature, Mountain Image, Mountain Exposition, Adventure Travel, Mountaineering History, and Canadian Rockies.

For 31 years the mountain community has celebrated the spirit of adventure at the Banff Mountain Film Festival. In 2006, the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festivals will feature a week-long series of events, with a projected attendance of approximately 12,000. The film festival World Tour will travel to over 25 countries on six continents bringing the festival films to a total audience of over 170,000.
