The largest youth-produced film festival in Canada, the festival is an annual showcase in Ottawa of the best of student filmmaking from across the country. Featuring a myriad of guest speakers and workshops, CNYFF is an invaluable resource for young, Canadian filmmakers. Through its many partnerships with international film festivals, CNYFF acts as Canada's unofficial ambassador of student filmmaking.

The festival was founded in the summer of 2004 by a collective of Ontario student filmmakers. The event quickly expanded into its current, internationally-recognized state through the whirlwind of support it recieved from across Canada (in particular from dozens of Canadian universities and The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) Since then, the five-day event has taken place at prominent theatres across Ottawa, featured films from every province in the country, and developed a unique, touring workshop program that visits Canadian public schools across the country.
